Position Summary:

This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading non-profit charitable organization. Under the direction of the Family Director, the Child Watch Assistant provides an excellent member experience by directing the Child Watch Center toward its primary goal of putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all through exercise. performance of duties in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Basic Duties and Responsibilities:


Create and maintain a physically and mentally safe environment of concern, trust and support in which children can grow.

Supervise the supervision of all children; claims that children are never left alone; make sure all children are supervised at all times.

Establish positive relationships with parents, children, volunteers and other staff; be a positive role model.

Supervise positive reinforcement and redirection of children.

Provide an excellent member experience by addressing member issues and implementing feedback.

Get to know the reception area for check-in and check-out of children.

Engage children in quality age-appropriate activities, a weekly calendar of crafts, arts and crafts, active play and centre-based learning.

Inventory, inventory maintenance and supply requests under the direction of the Family Prime Time Supervisor.

Keep the Family Prime Time Center clean.

Transport children to class via Wee Deliver and ensure they are registered for class (may not apply to all branches).

Learn about programs and special events throughout the facility and encourage families to get involved.

Actively participate in YMCA functions as per supervisor.

Attend all required staff meetings and provide constructive input.

Replace employees if necessary.

Know, understand and follow all industry specific emergency procedures; provide first aid to children and/or staff if necessary

Supervise toileting and diaper changing for children as needed.

Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Experience, education and qualifications

Previous experience working or volunteering with children aged 6 weeks to 11 years.

Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills are critical to the success of this position.

Training and Certification:

Bloodborne Pathogens, Safety Employee and Youth Protection Series online training is required prior to first assignment to position.

You must hold CPR, AED and First Aid certifications or successfully complete these certifications within the specified time frame as required by your branch.

Must complete online Hazard Communication training within first 90 days of employment.

Must attend and complete additional training as required by the Director as per branch requirements

Duties are performed in a child care environment; Childcare workers can sometimes be exposed to adverse working conditions, communicable infectious diseases and the risk of injury to children. All child care staff are required to adhere to Family Prime Time Center's preventive health policies at all times. The noise level in the working environment is medium to above average.
